Field Guide Term:
Content Management System (CMS)

A content management system is a system that (in theory) makes adding and editing content on a website more user friendly than manipulating code and files. Worpdress has the lions share of the CMS market.  As of the writing of this entry 14.7% of the top 100 websites are run on WordPress.  39% of all e-commerce sites are run on WordPress.  One of the reasons for those numbers is WordPress’s relative user-friendliness compared to other CMS’s.  WordPress is also supported by a worldwide community of developers that keep it innovative, secure, and accessible.  This article explains why we love WordPress a little more.

Other CMSs include:

  • Joomla
  • Magento
  • Drupal
